Poker Profiles: Layne Flack

Layne Flack has a couple of famous mentors. That is probably one of the reasons he is currently on his way to Poker greatness.

Layne was born in Rapid City, South Dakota on May 18, 1969. He was raised in Montana. His first taste of Poker was when he was just a young child. Layne's grandparents showed him into the game. When he became older, he was so engrossed to Poker that he often overlooked his casino Night Manager job because of it. He even used to jump from a casino to another just to ply Poker. After a while, Layne decided to quit his job at the casino and move on to make a fulltime Poker career.

On his way, he met certified winning player Johnny Chan. Johnny helped Layne improve in his game. He is also the one who taught him to slow down after a big loss. Huck Seed is also significant to Layne's career as well as Daniel Negreanu. Huck gave him the encouragement he needed to take his skill one level up high at the tournament scene while Daniel did everything a friend would and should while Layne was in crisis.

It was in 1997 that Layne officially started a career as a professional player in Las Vegas, Nevada. On his first dive, he won first prize at a Hall of Fame Poker Classic event. After that, he got his hands on as many tournaments as he could play, which obviously helped beef up his bank account and cement his reputation as one of the better Poker professionals, not just one of them. Since then, Layne has won no less than five World Series of Poker bracelets from different events. Layne also has several final table finishes at the World Poker Tour. He even managed to snatch a WPT title in 2003.

His cash ins and final table appearances became regular. Unfortunately, Layne's successes translated into something ugly. He became addicted to drugs and alcohol. Since 2000, he regularly tried different drugs. He often arrived at tournaments wasted. However, his game remains as good as ever, if not even better. In fact, Phil Hellmuth regarded him as a No Limit Hold'em genius. When Layne's drug intake makes him fearless, he often becomes a fearful player at the table.

Then again, drugs certainly did not do any good in his personal life. In 2004, his girlfriend decided to solicit an intervention. Layne spent a month in a drug rehabilitation center through Daniel Negreanu's money. Later that year, Layne is back into the game and started to finish with a win one after another.
